Here's
a rendering of a modeling experiment I did a few months ago during a long plane
flight. I tried to write a program that would create a curve that
coiled around another curve. It also spaced the pitch of the coils
based on their position in Z so the cord looks stretched out at the top. I
swept a circle along the coil to create the cord you see.
